Brookside Buzz - Monday, 10/27/24
Good Evening Brookside Bears!
We are very excited to announce that through the efforts of Mrs. Porcello and her love of science, our school has received a Moon Tree.
What is the Moon Tree Project? The Moon Tree Project is a unique initiative that began in 1971, aiming to plant seeds that had orbited the Moon on Earth.
The project was conceived by Stuart Roosa, the lunar module pilot on Apollo 14. Roosa was a former U.S. Forest Service smokejumper, and he had the idea to carry tree seeds on the mission as a way to commemorate the Apollo program and contribute to future generations. The seeds were carried to the Moon aboard the Apollo 14 mission and returned to Earth after spending eight days in lunar orbit. Moon Trees are trees grown from seeds that orbited the Moon aboard the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. These seeds were part of a biological experiment to study the effects of spaceflight on plant life.
Our Artemis I Moon Tree, a Liquidambar styraciflua (American Sweetgum) was grown from a seed that orbited the Moon during the November 16, 2022–December 11, 2022 mission. After the flight, Moon Trees were grown in eight United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service facilities, including the six nurseries that are part of the National Nursery System, two research facilities, and one state nursery. Your seedling was grown at J. Herbert Stone Nursery located in Central Point, Oregon .
We will be having a special lunch on Monday October 28, 2024. Moon Pancake Sandwiches with sausage, orange carrot rockets, ranch dip and Galactic orange wedges!
On Friday November 1, 2024, we will be having a school wide ceremony to acknowledge our special tree at 10:00.
This week is a full week of school.
On Thursday, October 31, 2024 at 10:00, we will have our school Halloween Parade. If students are participating in the parade, they should not wear costumes with any kind of weapon or mask to school. Students should be able to dress themselves if not wearing the costume to school. Please do not wear costumes that are of a scary nature as we have very young children participating and do not want to scare them.
PTO News: Please take a moment to register your student for the Brookside Turkey Trot fundraiser. Registration allows us to apply donations to their record so they receive prizes - and they even get a prize just for registering!
Register at https://www.getmovinfundhub.com/register and use School ID 66eb18a90f47a.
Share your child's link with family, friends, and colleagues to help increase donations.
Donations are accepted online and in cash - please send cash donations to school in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name. The PTO can apply cash donations to your child's account so they receive prizes and build towards their classroom's ranking!
All students take part in the November 15th Trot regardless of donations totals. All dollars raised are used to provide for field trips, community events, and other enrichment activities at the school.
Thank you for supporting our school and enjoy the rest of your evening.

This is a full week of school.
PTO News: This Wednesday October 9, is our virtual PTO meeting. We will send a link out via ParentSquare Post tomorrow.
We will have a some changes at Brookside with our administrative staff to help our friend sat Greenmont Elementary.
Our friends at Greenmont Elementary School had an unexpected Grade 5 teacher vacancy for an extended period. The administration has been diligently working to fill this position with a qualified teacher. Effective October 7 through November 1, 2024, Mrs. Romano, our assistant principal, will be teaching this class at Greenmont.
In her absence, Superintendent Stone has secured the expertise of Mrs. Patricia Tobin, a retired principal, to assist me with the daily operations of Brookside on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mrs. Tobin brings over twenty years of valuable experience as a school administrator to our district.
As a district, we are committed to supporting all of our schools and ensuring that every student in Dracut receives the highest quality of education. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for supporting our school community. Enjoy the rest of your evening.
