Brookside Update 6/21/24
Good Afternoon Brookside Families!
I hope everyone has found a way to stay cool this week and are enjoying the first week of summer! This email contains some important documents that you can also find on DPS website. The bus letter and instructions to purchase bus passes are attached to this email. The Free and Reduced lunch portal will not be open until August but you can still apply for the bus pass and check the box for Free and Reduced lunch.
Don't forget to read this summer too! Summer reading is like a mental gym for kids! It keeps their reading skills sharp over the break, preventing the "summer slide" that can hurt progress. But it's more than just schoolwork – it's a chance to explore exciting stories, learn new things, and keep imaginations soaring all summer long.
Attached is the summer reading link for all students and the district calendar.
Enjoy your summer!

MCAS will continue this week with Grade 4 Session 2 on April 9 and make ups on the 12 for grades 3 and 4.
I am enclosing the link to our student handbook and would ask parents to review page 42 on dress code in schools. If a student is found violating school dress code policy, we do have clothing options available in the nurse’s office or we can call home for a change of clothes.
Just a friendly reminder, that all cell phones brought into school must be left in a student’s backpack during the day.
Tomorrow April 8, is an exciting day as we will be experiencing a solar eclipse. The school and district are not holding any special viewing parties though teachers have been discussing the uniqueness of the solar eclipse. The eclipse will be starting as we are dismissing. I have included a few sights for families to view for ideas and safety on viewing.

Brookside Update 12/11/23
December 11, 2023
Dear Brookside families,
The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priority.
To provide our school an opportunity to practice emergency response procedures, our students and staff participated in a school-wide emergency preparedness drill this morning. This drill is called the ALiCE Enhanced Lockdown Procedure. Members of the Dracut Police Department were present to assist us in this practice drill.
It is important to note that there was NO real threat or emergency at Brookside Elementary School today. These are only drills intended to improve our ability to protect students and staff. Drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operations plan and improve our response skills. Since these drills will continue each year, we will use what we learned from today’s drill to further our ability to keep our school community safe.
As they do with fire drills, classroom teachers and support staff work with students to help them understand and know what to do if they are presented with the need to evacuate and/or secure the classroom.
The procedures are designed for your child’s protection and for your peace of mind. You are encouraged to discuss all emergency drills with your children if you feel it is appropriate.
Please feel free to call the school or email us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Monica Poitras

Brookside Update 10/26/23
Halloween Parade Logistics
Here are the logistics for the school-wide Halloween Parade which will be held on Tuesday, October 31st. We will march around the circular driveway in front of the school. Around 1:45 PM a couple of students from our 5th Grade Student Council will be in each hallway directing classes to get in line to walk out to the loop. Each grade level should be in the circle in their spots no later than 1:55pm. The parade will begin promptly at 2:00 PM, signaled by the playing of music. Students cannot wear masks or have accessories, weapons or face make up and or blow up costumes. If you plan to dismiss your child, you must send in a note. After the parade, parents must check in with their child’s teacher before leaving school grounds.
Each grade should stay together in the following areas (see map below):
Students will parade by grade level around the circle one time, returning to their “spot” so that all the other grades can watch them. The parade will begin with K students, once they are back in their spot grade 1 will begin. Grade 5 will continue right back into the building through the lower doors following their loop around the circle, followed by 4th grade and then 3rd grade. Kindergarten will re-enter through the playground doors. Grades 1 and 2 will return to their classrooms through the front door.
Parents should be parked and in the circle by 1:45 PM to eliminate traffic driving through the area as classes are entering the circle. Cones will block off the circle area at 1:40 PM so parents can only enter the parking lot through the field parking after that time.

Brookside Buzz - Sunday, 10/15/23
Good Evening Brookside Families,
Wednesday is an early release day at 11:30. Our Trunk or Treat Night is this Friday from 6:00-7:30.
The Dracut Public schools will begin implementing a new protocol for bus students and walkers as of October 16, 2023. This will allow first (1st) and second (2nd) grade students to be dropped off at a bus stop with older siblings. To participate, parents must complete a waiver (attached). This waiver is an optional choice for families. If you choose not to participate your child will continue to ride the bus and have an adult meet them at the bus stop or walk home with siblings.
Kindergarten students will not be allowed to obtain a waiver and or walk home with siblings. We will continue to follow the protocol of parents or a designated adult meeting them at the bus stop. If no one is there for them then kindergarten students will be returned to their school.
Additionally, please be aware that families who have first and second grade students riding a bus or walking home who do not have older siblings or who do not complete the waiver will still need an adult to meet them at the school or the bus stop or they will be returned to their school and someone will be called to pick them up.
For Students Riding a Bus: Signed waiver forms must be emailed to your school principal, or dropped off to the school’s main office. After submitting the form, parents of bus students must bring their child’s current bus pass to the Business Office at 2063 Lakeview Ave. (hours 8:30 AM - 4PM Monday - Friday). They will be issued a new yellow bus pass at that time. This special bus pass will alert their bus driver that their child is allowed to walk home or be dropped off with older siblings. This will also be noted on the bus’s route sheet.
For Walkers: Signed waiver forms must be emailed to your school principal, or dropped off to the school’s main office. If your child is a walker, the school will notify dismissal staff that the student is allowed to walk home with an older sibling.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly. The letter and waiver are attached to this email.

As it was discussed at a recent School Committee meeting regarding our playground, following the students' selection of the color scheme, an order was placed. Initial estimates by the manufacturer indicated that delivery and installation could be completed during this past summer. Unfortunately, supply chain issues have delayed the manufacture of our equipment. At this time we expect installation to occur in the early spring, as soon as the snow melts. I will provide an update later this winter or whenever I receive an update.
In the student handbook, is an opt out of photograph/media opt out form. If you do not want your child’s picture used for school purposes such as newspaper pictures or social media posts, please submit this form.
